The FF MEP for Ireland North West, Seán Ó Neachtain will not contest the election as expected. He said that he was not going to run for the European Parliament for health reasons. This will put FF in a awkward position in the North West as they don't have anyone with the same profile/electoral base, and it is current FF policy not to risk putting a serving TD (MP) in the race for fear of losing the by-election and whittling down the government's majority.
The Irish Times has reported that this will boost Declan Ganley's chances of getting elected - he is running in the same constituency.
Paschal Mooney is the selected Fianna Fail candidate for this constituency
